Avanti Express logistics hub for UK
distribution

October is the busiest month of the year for the Avanti
Express logistics
hub team and this October was the busiest ever. Many of Avanti's customers
know about our great, customer focussed, delivery services but
some won't be aware of our logistics hub based in Manchester.
All of customers have access to the logistics hub services so
I thought that it was about time I shared some details with
you.

Every October we receive a delivery of 100,000
University Careers Directories on behalf of our
customer Graduate Prospects, the UK’s leading provider
of information, advice and opportunities to students
and graduates. The directories are printed in the UK
and delivered to Avanti's logistics
hub by road haulage.
Graduate Prospects
provides us with a list of Universities with the
quantities of directories for each location. Our
despatch team contacts every careers department at
each individual university to arrange delivery times.
The planners then work out delivery routes for maximum
efficiency based on route planning, traffic and local
knowledge of the location of the delivery point with
respect to the closest parking bay.
Some
pallets are delivered complete whilst others broken
into sets of packs for delivery and labelled for
collection by the drivers. 100,000 directories were
delivered to 230 universities in 5 days and not a
single delivery was late.

Avanti Express provides
a range of services such as the careers directories
but more usually the logistics hub tends to specialise
in furniture. On any given day there are carpets,
reproduction leather sofas, doors, 3-piece suites,
fire places, etc.
Some of our customers do not
have sufficient space to accommodate their sales
volume so the furniture is sent directly from the
manufacturer to our logistics hub. When items arrive
they can either follow a simple storage and delivery
process or a more complex process designed in
conjunction with the customer. Many of the items that
are received as bulk packaged items are then unpacked
and inspected for any signs of manufacturing defects
or in-transit damage. Once they have passed inspection
the items are repackaged for delivery to the end
consumer.
Some warehouses have formal systems
whereby picking lists and despatches are done at set
times during the day. Avanti is
very much a customer service focussed business and
therefore we pick and despatch items at any time of
the day or night in order to have it arrive with the
end consumer at the agreed time whether that is local
to the hub in Manchester or at the end of the country
in Inverness or Plymouth.
Loading furniture
into the delivery van is usually a two man exercise as
are many of the deliveries. After a member of the
despatch team has spoken to the end customer they will
allocate the appropriate number of experienced
delivery drivers to each item depending on it's size,
value and the details of the delivery location. |
